As the Spring Festival draws near, the volume of checked baggage at the capital’s airport continues to rise. Despite the sharp increase in operational volume, BGS remains committed to maintaining its high standards of efficient, accurate, and speedy baggage handling. By adopting flexible baggage-handling measures and adhering to the principle of "genuine and heartfelt service," BGS is firmly focused on its core responsibilities and is diligently ensuring smooth baggage handling during the Spring Festival travel period.
According to statistics, since the official start of the Spring Festival travel season on January 26, the average daily volume of luggage has reached nearly 35,000 pieces, representing an 85.31% increase compared to the average daily volume during last year’s Spring Festival travel season. Despite this steep rise in luggage volume, BGS baggage handlers have remained committed to maintaining their high service standards. In response to the daily fluctuations in luggage volume, the Baggage Division of the BGS Apron Operations Department has proactively prepared and planned ahead, appropriately scheduling overtime staff and making special arrangements to ensure robust support during the Spring Festival travel season. To address the potential adverse effects of special icy and snowy weather conditions during the travel season on luggage transportation, the Baggage Division has further standardized the handling and stacking procedures for luggage, refining the loading and unloading processes in greater detail. When employees carry out outbound sorting and aircraft-side loading and unloading operations, luggage is treated with utmost care—no rough handling is allowed. All items are handled gently, with strict adherence to service guidelines such as "larger items must not be placed on top of smaller ones, heavier items must not be stacked on lighter ones, and wooden items must not be placed on top of paper items." Every step—from tearing labels, applying labels, scanning, and verifying—must be uniformly standardized and performed with absolute accuracy. During periods of predicted rain or snowfall, BGS requires that luggage be stacked upright to minimize the contact area of checked bags on luggage carts. Additionally, plastic covers are placed over checked bags, and netting is securely hung around them, thereby reducing the likelihood of damage or wetting. For incoming luggage, sorters are instructed to wait in advance at the corresponding carousel, placing each suitcase horizontally on the conveyor belt with the handle facing upward and wheels positioned inward, facilitating quick retrieval by passengers and significantly reducing waiting times and effort. Soft-sided luggage is transported using pallets to prevent it from getting stuck in equipment and to avoid any potential delays.
In response to the noticeable increase in “three-over” baggage during the Spring Festival travel period, the BGS Baggage Division has stepped up standardized inspections of baggage handling operations on the tarmac. Management personnel from each shift conduct comprehensive on-site inspections and monitoring of baggage handling activities every day. Special attention is paid to the details and critical stages of baggage handling, with close monitoring of operations inside the cargo hold. The division closely supervises the tarmac handling techniques employed by loaders as well as the standards for stowing baggage within the cabin. Staff are constantly reminded to adhere to proper operating procedures, and any instances of rough or improper handling are promptly addressed and stopped. Furthermore, the division provides guidance and handles issues identified during inspections and supervision, thereby enhancing the service awareness of baggage handlers. As of now, the Spring Festival travel period has been underway for one week, during which BGS has handled a total of 2,892 inbound and outbound flights and 244,893 pieces of baggage.
At the Spring Festival travel operation site, baggage handlers carefully and meticulously load and unload each passenger’s luggage, taking great care to ensure that every “silent traveler” has a smooth journey and arrives home safely. This is the duty of every “baggage handler” at BGS. With high-quality service, stringent standards, and efficient support, they will warmly accompany every traveler throughout their Spring Festival travel journey.
